How Thick Should a Concrete Driveway Be? (And What the Bid Won't Tell You)

Thickness is the question homeowners know to ask, which makes it the number contractors know to answer confidently. The real story: thickness matters, but it's one of four specs that decide how long your driveway lasts — and it's the easiest one to shave invisibly once the forms are up. Here's what the numbers should be, why, and how to verify you got them.

The short answer

  • 4 inches — the standard for a residential concrete driveway carrying cars, SUVs, and pickups, per industry spec (Concrete Network).
  • 5 inches — the recommendation when anything heavy uses the slab regularly: work trucks, loaded trailers, RVs, boats, or a heavy EV. About 20% more concrete buys roughly 50% more load capacity, because slab strength rises faster than thickness.
  • 6 inches — dump-truck, equipment, and commercial territory. Overkill for most homes, correct for a shop pad or a drive that sees deliveries.

Those numbers assume the slab sits on a properly compacted base. A 5-inch slab on loose fill will lose to a 4-inch slab on compacted stone every time — which is the first thing the bid won't volunteer.

Why 4 inches — and why your existing driveway might not have it

Four inches is where a normally reinforced slab reliably spreads a passenger vehicle's wheel loads into the base without flexing enough to crack. It's also a full inch more than what a lot of Charlotte's 1990s–2000s production-builder driveways actually got: builder-grade pours were routinely thin, over wire mesh or nothing, on minimally prepared clay. The other three numbers that matter as much as thickness

1. Strength: 4,000 PSI

Residential driveways are specified between 3,000 and 4,000 PSI compressive strength — but ACI 318, the concrete building code, requires 4,000 PSI minimum for concrete exposed to freeze-thaw with deicers (Concrete Network / ACI 318). Charlotte freezes and Charlotte salts, so 4,000 PSI air-entrained mix is the correct order here, not the premium option. Federal research shows freeze-thaw damage from a weak mix can stay invisible for 10–15 years before it surfaces as scaling and spalling (FHWA) — you cannot see this corner being cut.

2. Reinforcement: structural rebar

Concrete is enormously strong in compression and weak in tension. Rebar carries the tension so ground movement — and Piedmont red clay moves — doesn't pull the slab apart. Wire mesh is better than nothing; a tied rebar grid is better than mesh; "we don't need steel in a driveway" is a contractor telling you their price is low for a reason.

3. The base: compacted stone on graded subgrade

The majority of driveway failure is base failure. The spec that matters: organic topsoil out, subgrade graded and compacted, stone base compacted in lifts. On red clay, base prep is the whole ballgame — clay swells wet and shrinks dry, and only a uniform compacted base keeps that movement from telegraphing into the slab.

4. Joints: cut to a plan, at the right depth

Control joints should be cut to a quarter of slab depth (1 inch deep on a 4-inch slab) on panels roughly 10–12 feet square, laid out before the pour. Concrete will crack; joints decide whether it cracks in straight lines you'll never notice or in lightning bolts across the middle of a panel.

Special cases worth speccing up

  • EVs and heavy trucks. A typical EV runs about 1,000 pounds heavier than its gas equivalent (Recurrent Auto) — a nightly point load your slab carries for decades. If there's an EV, RV, or loaded work truck in your future, 5 inches with rebar is cheap insurance bought at the only moment it's cheap: pour day.
  • The apron. Where the drive meets the street it takes turning loads and the street's drainage — it should never be thinner than the field of the slab, and it fails first when it is.
  • Edges. Slab edges carry loads with support on only one side. Good practice thickens edges that will see wheels — ask how the bid handles it.

How to verify thickness without trusting anyone

  1. Before the pour: look at the forms. A 2x4 form board is 3.5 inches tall — a "4-inch" driveway formed with 2x4s laid on grade is already half an inch short. Ask what the formed depth is and where it's measured.
  2. During: thickness is measured after grading, across the whole slab — not just at the forms. High spots in the base are how 4 inches becomes 3 in the middle where the loads actually travel.
  3. In writing: thickness, PSI, reinforcement, base scope, and joint plan should all be line items in the contract.
